Travel east via the Princes Highway from Melbourne, using CityLink and the M1 tollway or the Tullamarine Freeway if you're flying in. Travel through the dairy country of western Gippsland, the powerhouse of Victoria in the Latrobe Valley and along the coastal plains to Bairnsdale. From here you join the start of the Great Alpine Road which takes you up into Victoria's High Country and the Omeo Region along Australia's highest year-round accessible sealed road at 1825m above sea level.
You could take an alternative route from Melbourne, heading north along the Hume Highway, the major route to Canberra and Sydney and joining the Great Alpine Road at its northern end in Wangaratta.

You join the Sydney Melbourne Coastal Drive at Cann River winding through coastal wilderness and rainforests until you join the Great Alpine Road where it begins in Bairnsdale, taking you up to the Omeo Region and Victoria's High Country.
